Haven is a Home

The Project

The devastating Bayindeen bushfires (February 2024) on the Mt Cole area have had a devastating
impact on the wildlife of the State Forest. Of particular concern has been the impact on
the small mammals such as the Brush Tailed Phascogale, Sugar Glider and other arboreal
mammals which have been listed as vulnerable. The fire impacted food sources and
nesting hollows and exposed the vulnerable populations to predation and habitat loss.

Our project aims to identify the location of a remnant population, monitor the population
and provide habitat and the installation of nesting boxes.

Trail cameras purchased, will be used to identify areas of the Brush-tailed Phascogale,
Sugar Glider and other arboreal mammals populations.

The appropriate nesting boxes will be constructed, installed and monitored by cameras. It is
envisaged that sugar gliders will also use the nesting boxes.

Volunteers will conduct surveys, collect data and monitor the populations. By focusing on
the Brush -Tailed Phascogale as the mainly targeted species, this will enable our group to
gain the knowledge needed to undertake further wildlife projects.

Weed control be necessary as it will the opportunistic first emergent species post fire.

Resources

We need a lot of help and advice to ensure the success of this project. Most will come from people we engage to run workshops and workshops run by other Landcare groups.

Our Facebook page is used to engage our members and notify them of events

However, we will include any documents that are part of the project below.
